The Truth About Healing: It’s a Marathon, Not a Sprint

Last month, I wrote a piece for IndaCloud called “May Your Mental Health Be Kind.” I wrote it while sitting with a lump in my throat, hoping my words would land softly for someone else the way I wish they had landed for me years ago.

It was honest.
It was necessary.
But it was also… f i l t e r ed.

Because corporate blogs can only hold so much.

This is the version I wish I could’ve published there.

Mental Health Isn’t a Mood. It’s a Marathon.

I used to think healing was a one-time destination. Like one day I’d wake up and finally feel better, forever.

But the truth is, my mental health journey has been more like a loop… full of detours, relapses, tiny victories, and moments where I didn’t recognize myself at all.

Some mornings I wake up and instantly feel like I’m already behind. Sometimes I overthink a single text for three hours. And sometimes I nail a full day of content creation and still cry over takeout because my brain can’t hold joy and fatigue at the same time.

It’s not laziness.
It’s bandwidth.
And I’m learning to protect mine like my life depends on it.
Because well… it kinda does.

What Actually Helps Me Cope

In that IndaCloud blog, I listed some of my favorite grounding tools. And yes, I still use every single one. But here’s a more honest list for this space:

  • Texting “I’m spiraling” to a friend who gets it
  • Sitting on the floor in silence until my body calms down
  • Letting a weed sesh bring me back to center
  • Letting a nap count as a productive task
  • Saying no without guilt, even if I overthink it later
  • Creating something when I don’t have the words

These are not wellness hacks.
They are survival mechanisms I’ve turned into rituals.
And I’m proud of that.

Why I Talk About Cannabis So Much

Because it works for me. And I refuse to feel ashamed about something that helps me function.

Cannabis helped me manage what no prescription ever could. It helped me sit still long enough to hear myself think. It helped me rebuild my capacity. Not in a way that erased my struggles, but in a way that helped me move with them.

It’s part of my life.
Part of my work.
Part of my truth.

If that makes some people uncomfortable, I lovingly suggest they keep scrolling.

To Anyone Who’s Still Figuring It Out

If you’re reading this with your heart in your throat and your to-do list untouched, I see you.

If today your biggest win was brushing your teeth, I celebrate you.

If you’ve been holding it together by a single thread, I want you to know that even fraying threads still hold weight.

This blog isn’t a guide. It’s a permission slip. (if you need it)

You get to heal at your own pace. You get to ask for help. You get to show up unfinished.

May your mental health be kind.
May it be gentle.
And may it always make room for the truth.

You’re not alone.

Love,
Mona Leafah
